Sports betting is legal in Croatia. Originally sports betting was a monopoly operated by Hrvatska Lutrija, the state lottery. After the passage of the original Games of Chance Law in 2002 the market was opened to private companies, both domestic and foreign. Hrvatska Lutrija remains one of the biggest operators in the sports betting market. There are currently more than 2,000 betting shops throughout the country. In 2010, betting shops were allowed to install one gaming machine per location.
